      What's New — Our Vision

      Supporting Girls Education

When I first started Moving Mountains it felt impossible to choose only one place to direct our donations. I felt pulled in so many directions for causes that spoke to my heart. I decided, instead of choosing one charity to focus on, that I would rotate organizations every few months and spread some good all around. It has worked well for us and supporting organizations big and small has been wonderful. But, as Moving Mountains has changed over these last 3 years, so has my understanding and thoughts on the issues facing women and girls around the globe. I am honoured to have partnered with so many worthy organizations over the years and contributed over $4800 to the work they are doing. However, I have felt my heart calling me a certain direction and I have decided to follow it.

As of now, Moving Mountains will be focussing on supporting the education of girls in developing countries. We know that when girls are given access to education they are given the power to transform their families, communities, countries, and the world. The longer girls stay in school, the higher their incomes, the less likely they will be forced into childhood marriages, the more opportunity they have for a rewarding future, and so much more. When we empower women and girls with education we see lasting impacts and meaningful improvements not just for the individual, but entire communities.

We have chosen a partner organization to make this contribution impactful and moving forward, for every piece sold, we will be supporting education for girls in developing countries.

Please reach out if you have any questions about our mission! We are excited to see what the future holds for Moving Mountains and are eager to start on this new path with you!

      Where it all Began

My name is Brittany, and I am the creator of Moving Mountains.

Moving Mountains was inspired by my father - an incredible man who always believed I could do anything and be anything. I lost him unexpectedly in 2015 and it was that loss that reminded me how short but still significant our lives can be. I have always believed that each of us needs to leave this world a little better than we found it, so in my father's honour I wanted to create something that could achieve that.

Moving Mountains is about empowering women and reminding them of their strength, power, passion, and purpose. It is meant to inspire those who wear our pieces and also support outstanding organizations supporting women and girls around the world. It is about choosing to make a difference - in your own life and in others.

When I first started with the idea for Moving Mountains I thought I wanted to find a single charity to support, but as I began to look around I found so many amazing organizations doing outstanding work. It became impossible to pick a single cause that seemed more important than another. I found organizations working to lift women out of poverty, shining a light on violence against women, raising awareness for the staggering number of missing and murdered Aboriginal women, offering education to girls who otherwise would go without, providing maternal health to developing countries, supporting women to push for positions of leadership in communities, politics, and companies, and on and on and on.

With so much incredible work being done, how would it be possible to just pick one? I decided I couldn’t, and instead created a model that allowed me to highlight the work of many organizations and hopefully play my small part in advancing their goals and connecting others with their worthy agendas.

Life is short and oh so precious. I believe that we need to leave this world a little better than we found it and I hope that Moving Mountains will allow myself and others to do that.

Dr. Seuss Book that inspired Moving Mountains name

The name for Moving Mountains was also inspired by my dad. Growing up he loved reading us Dr. Seuss and one of my favourites always was Oh the Places You’ll Go. The last two pages of the book read:

      And will you succeed?
      Yes! You will, indeed!
      (98 and ¾ percent guaranteed.)

be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray
or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O’Shea,
      you’re off to Great Places!
      Today is your day!
      Your mountain is waiting.
      So… get on your way!

I love that everyone’s mountain can be completely unique to them. No matter what your passion, challenge, goal or situation – everyone has a mountain waiting for them. Although Moving Mountains came out of the sadness of losing my father, I am happy that I can take from him the inspiration to create something good.

Along with running Moving Mountains, I am a wedding and portrait photographer. I live in Ottawa, Canada with my husband and I love drinking red wine, daydreaming, and hugging people I just met.

Thank you for sharing in this journey with me and please know that no matter what, I believe you can move mountains.
