      Because I am a Girl

Here at Moving Mountains we believe that our choices have an impact on others and the world. That is why for every purchase made we donate $5 to organizations supporting women and girls around the world.

We are thrilled to announce that for the next few months our donations will be going to Plan International’s Because I am a Girl campaign!

The Because I am a Girl campaign is a global initiative working to end gender inequality and promote girls’ rights. Plan International believes that when girls are educated, healthy and empowered, they can lift themselves and everyone around them out of poverty.

      The Plight of Girls

Girls in the poorest regions of the world are among the most disadvantaged people on the planet. They face unique barriers to survival and development — simply because they’re girls. We will never eliminate global poverty unless we invest equally in all our children and address inequalities for girls.

      The power of girls

There is no question that investing in girls in developing countries is key to reducing global poverty and instability. Girls have a unique power to positively influence the lives of those around them. If they are healthy, educated, and empowered, they will pull themselves out of poverty, and bring their children, communities and nations along with them.

      The plan for girls

Plan has a range of programs to improve the lives of girls and give them equal access to health care, education, protection, independence, and an opportunity to participate in society. Their programs include scholarships, safe schools and dormitories, reproductive and maternal health programs, life skills, vocational training, financial literacy programs, microfinance, and more.

      How to Get Involved

There are many ways to get involved and contribute to Because I am a Girl. For starters, you can create a Because I am a Girl Club where you can help empower youth to stand up for girls’ rights and gender equality in North America and around the world. Or you can join the Speaker’s Bureau and speak at local and global forums on gender equality. You could even host a fundraiser in your community or use your voice on social media to share what a brighter future for girls means to you #BrighterFuture.

      Where it all Began

My name is Brittany, and I am the creator of Moving Mountains.

Brittany wearing inspirational Moving Mountains necklace

Moving Mountains was inspired by my father - an incredible man who always believed I could do anything and be anything. I lost him unexpectedly in 2015 and it was that loss that reminded me how short but still significant our lives can be. I have always believed that each of us needs to leave this world a little better than we found it, so in my father's honour I wanted to create something that could achieve that.

Moving Mountains is about empowering women and reminding them of their strength, power, passion, and purpose. It is meant to inspire those who wear our pieces and also support outstanding organizations supporting women and girls around the world. It is about choosing to make a difference - in your own life and in others.

When I first started with the idea for Moving Mountains I thought I wanted to find a single charity to support, but as I began to look around I found so many amazing organizations doing outstanding work. It became impossible to pick a single cause that seemed more important than another. I found organizations working to lift women out of poverty, shining a light on violence against women, raising awareness for the staggering number of missing and murdered Aboriginal women, offering education to girls who otherwise would go without, providing maternal health to developing countries, supporting women to push for positions of leadership in communities, politics, and companies, and on and on and on.

With so much incredible work being done, how would it be possible to just pick one? I decided I couldn’t, and instead created a model that allowed me to highlight the work of many organizations and hopefully play my small part in advancing their goals and connecting others with their worthy agendas.

Life is short and oh so precious. I believe that we need to leave this world a little better than we found it and I hope that Moving Mountains will allow myself and others to do that.

Dr. Seuss Book that inspired Moving Mountains name

The name for Moving Mountains was also inspired by my dad. Growing up he loved reading us Dr. Seuss and one of my favourites always was Oh the Places You’ll Go. The last two pages of the book read:

      And will you succeed?
      Yes! You will, indeed!
      (98 and ¾ percent guaranteed.)
      KID YOU’LL MOVE MOUNTAINS!

      So…
be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray
or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O’Shea,
      you’re off to Great Places!
      Today is your day!
      Your mountain is waiting.
      So… get on your way!

I love that everyone’s mountain can be completely unique to them. No matter what your passion, challenge, goal or situation – everyone has a mountain waiting for them. Although Moving Mountains came out of the sadness of losing my father, I am happy that I can take from him the inspiration to create something good.

Along with running Moving Mountains, I am a wedding and portrait photographer. I live in Ottawa, Canada with my husband and I love drinking red wine, daydreaming, and hugging people I just met.

Thank you for sharing in this journey with me and please know that no matter what, I believe you can move mountains.
